Theoretical modeling approach to charged particle therapy:
Interaction of charged particle beam with matter is studied. Theoretical model is worked out to describe phenomena such as beam divergence and occurrence of Bragg peak. The effect of beam widening on the lateral spread of Bragg peak is investigated. The beginning of distal fall-off region is scrutinized by concepts from atomic physics. Key words: Beam widening; Mathematical modeling; Bragg peak

Hadron therapy is a part of radiation therapy, which uses not only beams of high energy ions, but also p-mesons, neutrons, electron beams, X- and gamma rays to irradiate cancer tumors. Proton therapy is an effective treatment especially against cancers located in areas which are inaccessible to surgeon's instruments or which are hard to treat by radiotherapy.

Deposition of dose in tissue during hadron therapy is caused by interaction of charged particle projectile with electrons and nuclides constituting the patient's tissue. Most interactions happen with electrons and by a little chance, with nucleus.
